Toast to the Year of the Monkey

Chinese New Year is one of the longest and most celebrated holidays in the world. Being the whiskey girl I am, I've blended together a cocktail to commemorate the Year of the Monkey this year. The Luck Be a Monkey is a libation made up of Michter's Small Batch Bourbon, one of my favorite whiskeys, tangerines and oranges-- auspicious Chinese New Year symbols-- and an allspice simple syrup shaken and poured over ice.

Luck Be a Monkey

1 1/2 oz. Michter's Bourbon
1 1/2 oz. fresh citrus juice (I used tangerines, mandarin and blood oranges)
1/2 oz. allspice simple syrup*

Glassware: Rocks glass

Garnish: Orange slice

How to mix this drink:
Combine bourbon, citrus juice and simple syrup into a cocktail shaker, over ice, and shake well. Pour into a rocks glass filled with ice and garnish with an orange slice.

* Allspice Simple Syrup
1 cup water
1/2 cup of organic raw sugar
1 teaspoon of ground allspice

In a small saucepan combine sugar, allspice and water. Bring to a boil, stirring, until sugar has dissolved. Allow to cool.
